"… with a knick-knack, paddy-whack, give a dog a bone…"

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about the line from this nursery rhyme. When I look at my relationship closely, it seems I was being thrown a bone periodically to keep the peace without his having to expend too much energy or commit too much emotionally to the relationship. After years of feeling this way, push finally gave to shove and I decided to bury that bone for good. (more…)

I love to take my daughter to church! I hate to take my daughter to church! So what’s up with that?

Since she was a baby, my daughter has gone to church with me, though not consistently. It was my desire to go every week, but for a variety of reasons, that is not what happened. However, in the last three or four months, I haven’t missed a week. A good friend said it’s habit worth forming, and I have been taking that to heart. So now, every week, without fail I go to church, and I make sure my daughter goes too. Unfortunately, my daughter and I disagree about where to go to church. (more…)

Home, Alone Too?

Most people are familiar with the "Home Alone" movies starring Macaulay Culkin as Kevin McCallister, an 8-year-old boy whose parents inadvertently leave him at home unattended when they travel to France one Christmas. Kevin must perform some pretty incredible feats in order to ward off the would-be theives trying to rob his house in his family's absence.

That's one way to be home alone: You're in your house and no one else is there. This could be of your own choosing, as when you are happily single and living alone. It can also be against your wishes, as in the case of an unwanted divorce. But there's another kind of "home alone" which I refer to as Home, Alone Too. (more…)
